Shawbury Village Overview

Shawbury is a lively village in central Shropshire, located between Shrewsbury and Market Drayton. With a population of around 3,000, it includes members of the armed forces and their families stationed at the nearby RAF Shawbury base. The base, which trains helicopter aircrew, air traffic controllers, and flight operations personnel for all three services, has a strong partnership with the village. An RAF representative is an ex-officio member of the Parish Council.

The village offers a few retail shops and two pubs, though the Post Office recently closed and is now replaced by an Outreach Office at the Village Hall once a week. The village is also home to a well-attended church, a thriving primary school, and a mobile library that visits twice a week. The Village Hall provides excellent community facilities.

Shawbury Parish Council

Shawbury Parish Council is the local government for Shawbury and surrounding areas, including Edgebolton, Muckleton, and Great Wytheford. It’s made up of 12 elected members, with elections held every four years. The Council’s role is to improve the community and environment.

Local councils have the authority to raise money via a tax called the precept. This funding supports local services such as street lighting, ground maintenance, play areas, and litter collection. The precept is occasionally supplemented by grants and other funding.

The Parish Clerk is the only paid employee, with other services contracted out. Council members do not receive payment, although they can claim small allowances for expenses related to Council duties (none currently claim).

Council meetings are held every second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Village Hall. Local residents are encouraged to attend and raise concerns before the meeting begins.

Development and Funding

A local committee and the Parish Council completed a Parish Plan to identify the needs and goals of the community. This has helped the Council adopt a proactive approach to development. Thanks to this, over £60,000 in grants has been raised to support various community projects.

How Council Funds Are Spent

Each year, the Council’s main expenses include:

  • Street Lighting
  • Insurance
  • Litter Collection
  • Clerk’s salary and expenses
  • Grounds Maintenance
  • Burial Ground, Moat, and Recreation Ground Work
  • Children’s Play Areas
  • Rent
  • Membership of the Local Council Association
  • Grants to the community
